Mindy the Seagull

I have written about Mindy in the past and how she wormed her way into our household…And I have some sad news.
But first a re-cap;
Mindy observed how my FatCat Skittle organised his creature comforts:

It didn’t take her long to work out how to get her beak into some of that tasty cat food;

An open patio door and she’s in!

I tolerate this because she has impeccable manners. She never shouts or hassles me for anything. She very rarely craps indoors.
Skittle of course is delighted! He will sit next to her while she finishes off his dismal leftovers. And the moment she has walked out he gives me a meaningful look; OK, tin-opener you, time to top up my plate!

The Skittle cat and I have an arrangement; an empty bowl means a guaranteed top-up of fresh tasty morsels – but a bowl of cat food with the jelly licked off means hours of arguments… Agony for the both of us, really.

Mindy has raised several new gull generations on my roof, but this winter she broke her leg.I’m not sure if the tag she was fitted with by some do-gooder is to blame. But the upshot is that she has lost her mate and he has taken up with someone else…and poor Mindy is a rather sad little girl hobbling around my garden while her erstwhile partner and his new bird large it up on my roof.
I was busy in my studio today working on a new sculpture project when I heard her flat footed patter in the hall

She had broken in through my balcony door

… she has come to see me.

She follows me through the house like a tame chicken.

But she is not a chicken, she is wild and free, riding the waves and chasing the clouds! She is a Dover White Eagle, a creature meant to soar and swoop!

And all this is going through my head when she just stares up at me and says; shut up and love me! Love me and feed me and talk to me. Tickle the feathers on my head and allow me to visit you freely.
And I will. I shall feed her cat food and I shall treat her like the pet she obviously wants to be.

What do I know.

About Anna

I am a ceramic sculptor living on the South coast near London, England. My work is influenced by my experience of the earth as a living being and seeing how we are all connected with eachother and with the things that surround us. I create ceramic torsos using molochite clay which I often smokefire in galvanised dustbins. I also make House Gods to protect and amuse, and Fat Birds - little smokefired sculptures that tell the story about what it is like to be a fat bird at peace with its surroundings.

    Dear Anna, this is so beautiful, you are so lucky one thay a seagull comes to your home and visits you… yes maybe because of food but she comes to you. How impressed me. I really cried when you said she came today to see you… This is amazing, so amazing… Just I wonder what about your cat, how she lets her… Should be a big war when seagull comes and eats her food… I loved all your photographs and you expressed so nicely too. Thank you so much. Blessing and Happiness, with my love, nia

      Haha, no Skittle cat loves it when Mindy eats his old food because he knows that he will then get fresh food which he prefers! He is a smart cat. He actually will sit right beside her and watch her eat…But once she’s finished, he will chase her out of the house.
      Lovely to meet you, and thank you for your comments xx

    Ok, that was…that was special. I loved it from beginning to hopefully not-the-end. I absolutely love the end. I’ve noticed that everything has a specific spirit, instinct aside, and everything must be judged, or understood, by their actions and the way they make you feel.

    For me, this goes for machines as well. Well, technically everything, but a lot of things don’t have much chance to show their personality. 😉

    Thank you for sharing that, and for the awesome pics! I wish Mindy and Skittles and you a long and happy life!

    Poor Mindy, thankfully she has the love of a good cat and a good human. Who needs a heartbreaking bird slut anyway! Go MINDY!

  6. that’s lovely. I’m glad Mindy has found someone to share things with – & is a lovely testament to the inter-connectedness of all things: people, seagulls, cats…
    Thank you 🙂

      Yes, I feel the interconnectedness too. There is no way Mindy will allow for anything but total involvement; like I said she’s not above a quick break-in if she sees a chance. Bless!
      Thank you for getting in touch, too! I really like to share this story and I’m happy it makes sense to you.

    What a lovely (and in a way sad) story, and pictures. It’s wonderful to feel the trust from an animal.

    I think whomever tagged her ankle, also took good care of her, probably even took her inside their home at some point. She seems comfortable with her broken leg in your home as well. I had a pet raccoon, a bit more of a pain in the butt, but I think animals and birds are a lot smarter and caring than we give them credit for…enjoy, and I hope Skittles doesn’t get a stray hair…… 😉
