Ceramic Installations

This is a ceramic installation in the crypt of St Mary’s in the Castle, Hastings. I made about 60 ceramic plaques, all featuring dolls heads with various inscriptions. Most of them were smoke fired.

I really like making installations – and I would like to do more of that kind of work.

About Anna

I am a ceramic sculptor living on the South coast near London, England. My work is influenced by my experience of the earth as a living being and seeing how we are all connected with eachother and with the things that surround us. I create ceramic torsos using molochite clay which I often smokefire in galvanised dustbins. I also make House Gods to protect and amuse, and Fat Birds - little smokefired sculptures that tell the story about what it is like to be a fat bird at peace with its surroundings.

Was this installation a commission? Is it still in the crypt? What was your inspiration for this installation? I find it quite fascinating – hope you don’t mind the questions 🙂 So much work has gone into this.

      Hi,
It wasn’t a commission, I just used the exhibition opportunity to do my thing….My inspiration was a failed marriage/divorce and also the need to create a rite around the divorce. I called the show ‘The Bridal Chamber’
Anyway, obsessively creating plaques, glazing and smoke firing them – breaking most before they were even finished, was a great therapy.
