This is a sculpture – or perhaps two – about a Frog that turned into a Boy for a day. I had a couple of dreams about that for some reason. What would happen, what would a frog make of suddenly being a boy; or a prince, even? We all know that little princes don’t much like it the other way around.
Perhaps I had the old story about Chuang Chou on my mind. Chuang Chou dreamed that he was a butterfly. When he woke up, he felt unsure as to whether he was Chuang Chou having dreamed that he was a butterfly, or whether he in actual fact was the butterfly, dreaming that it was Chuang Chou.
The sculptures are ceramic and instead of glazing them the traditional way, I added a bronze finish by mixing bronze powder with matte transparent varnish…and then rubbing back like mad with steel wool.
The Boy is 10” tall and 5” wide. The frog is about 4” long.
